Early Childhood Development Practitioner

Occupational Certificate: Early Childhood Development Practitioner (NQF Level 4)

This qualification is designed to prepare learners to support the holistic development and early learning of young children within early childhood development (ECD) settings. It equips learners with the knowledge, skills, and practical competence required to provide quality care, facilitate learning, and create a safe and stimulating environment for children from birth to early school years. The programme is suitable for individuals working in or aspiring to work in early childhood development centres, community-based programmes, or home-based care environments.

The purpose of the qualification is to develop competent practitioners who can plan and implement age-appropriate learning activities, support children’s emotional, social, physical, and cognitive development, and promote inclusive and responsive care practices. Learners are prepared to contribute to structured early learning programmes while ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of children in their care.

The curriculum integrates foundational theory with practical workplace application and covers key areas such as child development, early learning programme planning, classroom management, health and safety in ECD environments, child observation and assessment, inclusive education practices, and communication with parents and caregivers. Emphasis is placed on play-based learning, child-centred approaches, and creating supportive and nurturing learning environments.

On completion, graduates may work as early childhood development practitioners, ECD assistants, or caregivers in registered early learning centres, preschools, community programmes, or private childcare settings.
